Erosion control in Hendersonville, NC
Erosion control around Hendersonville
Most erosion problems are water problems first. Rain falls on a roof, a road or a hillside above you, gathers into one path and cuts through whatever is in its way. In Hendersonville that path often ends at a creek or a low spot, and it takes your soil with it.
Our approach starts above the damage. We find where the water is coming from and give it a better way through. That might mean regrading, a rock-lined swale, a rebuilt ditch, silt fence and seed on a raw slope or rock along a creek bank. Where a slope is too steep to lay back, a block wall may be the answer. What you get is ground that holds still.
Hendersonville is about 35 miles from our yard in Leicester, so jobs here are booked ahead. The main erosion control page covers the service across the region. The Hendersonville service area page lists everything else we do in Henderson County.

Local know-how
Erosion control in Hendersonville: what to know
Erosion control around Mud Creek and its branches
Hendersonville is the county seat of Henderson County, about 22 miles south of Asheville. Mud Creek runs north past the east side of downtown and on to the French Broad River, and smaller creeks feed it from across the city. Those creeks carry a lot of runoff after heavy rain.
The city knows it. Its stormwater department is working on undersized drainage in the Wash Creek watershed. It is also restoring floodplain on Lower Mud Creek, which includes stabilising a stretch of the Mud Creek streambank. On a private lot the same idea applies at a smaller scale. Slow the water, give it room and protect the bank where it hits.
Who handles erosion rules in Hendersonville
Erosion control here is not run from Asheville. The Henderson County Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Local Program covers the City of Hendersonville, along with Laurel Park, Fletcher and Flat Rock. Projects with public money, and projects in Mills River's jurisdiction, go to the NC DEQ Asheville Regional Office instead.
Whether your job needs a plan or a permit depends on how much ground is disturbed and where it is. Ask the Henderson County Site Development office before a large job starts. Ben will also tell you at the estimate if yours looks like one that needs a permit.
Hillside yards, drives and creek banks
Hendersonville sits near the Eastern Escarpment, and the lots on the hills around town shed water fast. A slope that has been cut for a house or a drive and never properly covered will keep washing. We reshape it where we can, divert the water above it and cover the surface with seed, mulch or stone. See slope stabilization for more detail.
Where a creek is eating into the yard, rock is placed to rebuild the bank and protect the ground behind it. Stream work can need its own permit, and we raise it before anything starts.

Who enforces erosion and sediment rules in the City of Hendersonville?
The Henderson County Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Local Program covers the city. Publicly funded projects go to the NC DEQ Asheville Regional Office. Call the county before a large job.
My yard turns into a stream every time it rains. Where do you start?
Above the problem. We find where the water enters the property and give it a lined path around or through, then cover any bare ground so it stops washing.
Can you stop a creek from cutting into my back yard?
Usually. Rock is placed to rebuild and armour the bank, and the ground above it is regraded so runoff does not cut a new channel. Work in a stream can need a permit, and that comes first.
