What Leicester drives are up against
Few homes here sit beside the road. The house is usually up a hollow or on a ridge, and the drive climbs to it from a valley road such as Sandy Mush, Newfound or Turkey Creek. That means long runs of gravel, steep pitches and curves cut across the slope. Water coming off the hill above crosses the drive wherever it can. The clay underneath holds water and goes soft. A drive like that takes more looking after than a short flat one in town, and it shows every shortcut taken when it was built.
Repairs: ruts, washouts and potholes
Most trouble is a drive that has rutted down the middle, washed at a steep spot or lost its edge. A load of stone on top covers the problem for a season. The repair that lasts reshapes the drive so it sheds water to the sides, cuts or cleans the ditch, sets a pipe where water has to cross, and then puts fresh stone down and compacts it. Washed-out drives and private roads have been some of the most common work in Western North Carolina since Hurricane Helene.
New gravel driveways
A new drive starts with the route. On a Leicester hillside a small change in where the drive runs changes how much has to be cut, how steep it is and where the water goes. Once the route is set, the corridor is cleared, the drive is cut to grade, based with stone, compacted and finished. If trees are in the way first, see land clearing in Leicester.
Shared and private roads
Many homes here are reached by a private road shared with the neighbours. North Carolina counties do not maintain roads, so if the state has not taken a road over, the owners along it look after it. A shared road is the same work as a drive at a larger scale, and the neighbours usually split the job. See access roads and private roads.
Where the drive meets the state road
Most public roads around Leicester are maintained by NCDOT, not by a town. A new entrance onto a state-maintained road generally needs an NCDOT driveway permit, and the pipe under the entrance sits in the state's ditch. Check with the local NCDOT district office before a new entrance is cut. For the pipe itself, see culvert and driveway pipe installation.
Winter
A steep gravel drive is also the one that stays snowed in. This winter the same crew is doing snow removal around Leicester.
Getting a price
Ben comes out, walks the drive with you and gives you a price before any work starts. Length, slope, how much cutting it needs and how much stone it takes decide the number.

Do you repair gravel driveways in Leicester, NC?
Yes. Hazy River Earthworks is based in Leicester, and regrading and rebuilding gravel drives is some of the most common work close to home.
Why does my driveway keep washing out?
Because the water has nowhere to go but down the drive. The fix is grade and drainage: a crown, a ditch or swale, and a pipe where the water has to cross. More stone on its own does not last.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway in Leicester?
A new entrance onto a state-maintained road generally needs an NCDOT driveway permit, and most public roads around Leicester are state roads. Check with the NCDOT district office before the entrance is cut.
Who looks after a private road in Buncombe County?
The owners along it. North Carolina counties do not maintain roads. Neighbours on a shared road usually split the cost of a rebuild.
How long does a driveway job take?
It depends on length, slope and how much has to be reshaped. Most residential drives are a matter of days, not weeks, once the weather allows.

Land Clearing
Trees, brush, briars and stumps taken off the ground so a mountain lot can be built on, driven on, fenced or used again.

ViewServiceErosion Control
Slopes stabilised, banks armoured and water redirected so the next heavy rain does not take the yard, the drive or the creek bank with it.
