Retaining walls in Woodfin, NC

Retaining walls around Woodfin

Woodfin homes are often stacked on steep ground. Your back door may open onto a bank, or your parking spot may be a narrow shelf above the street. The slope that came with the lot keeps creeping toward the house, the deck or the car. A retaining wall gives that ground a firm edge and takes the pressure off.

We build block walls on a compacted base, with drain pipe and clean stone behind them. Large block goes in by machine. When the wall is done, the ground around it is graded so water leaves the yard instead of pooling at the base. The result is level space you can use and a slope that stops moving.

Our yard in Leicester is about 10 miles away. The main retaining walls page covers the service across the region, and the Woodfin service area page lists the rest of our work in town.

Local know-how

Retaining walls in Woodfin: what to know

Why retaining walls are common in Woodfin

Woodfin borders the north side of Asheville, with the French Broad River through its western part. The old mill neighborhoods, Martel Village and Company Bottom, took their names from the industry that built the town. Above them, much of Woodfin is hillside, and lots there often leave little flat ground once the house is placed.

Helene showed what loose slopes do here. Buncombe County reported significant streambank erosion and slope instability along the north end of the Riverside Drive greenway segment after the storm. A wall will not fix a riverbank, but on a residential lot it is often the cleanest way to hold the ground behind a home.

Woodfin's steep slope rules and engineered walls

Woodfin has a steep slope ordinance of its own. The town's planning and zoning page ties it to elevation and average natural slope, starting at 2,200 feet with a 20 percent average slope. If your lot is high and steep, talk to the town before planning a big cut and wall.

Height matters too. A tall wall, or one holding up a house, a road or parking, can need an engineered design. Ben will say so at the estimate if your wall looks like one of them, so the engineer is involved before the block arrives rather than after.

Tight access on hillside streets

Hillside lots often come with tight access, so getting block, stone and a machine to the wall takes planning. We look at access on the first visit: where the truck can stop, where the machine can sit and where spoil can go. That shapes the schedule and the price, so it is settled before work starts.

Drainage gets the same attention. The pipe behind the wall has to empty somewhere safe, not onto a neighbor's lot or the street. Read retaining wall drainage explained for how that works.

Do you build retaining walls in Woodfin, NC?

Yes. Woodfin is about 10 miles from our yard in Leicester, and walls on steep residential lots are common work there.

Do I need an engineer for a wall in Woodfin?

Taller walls, and walls holding up a house, a road or parking, can need an engineered design. Ben will tell you at the estimate. If your lot is high and steep, also check Woodfin's steep slope ordinance with the town.

Can you get equipment onto a steep, narrow lot?

Usually, with planning. Access is checked on the first visit, and the machine and delivery plan are set before the job is scheduled.

Where does the water from behind the wall go?

Into a drain pipe at the base, which is carried to daylight, a ditch or another safe outlet. We plan the outlet so it does not dump water on the street or a neighbor's lot.
