Most retaining walls that fail do not fail because of the blocks. They fail because water builds up behind them with nowhere to go. Every wall here is built with drain pipe and clean stone behind it and fabric to keep the dirt out of the stone.

The base does the work
The first course sits on a dug, levelled and compacted base, because a wall is only as straight as what it stands on. From there the blocks go up course by course, set by machine where they are too heavy to lift.
Walls with the grading around them
A wall is usually part of a bigger job: cutting a pad, levelling a yard, holding a drive, or protecting a house from the slope above it. Because the same crew does the grading and the excavation, the wall and the ground around it are planned together.

Why does a retaining wall need drainage?
Water pressure behind a wall is what pushes it over. Drain pipe and stone let the water out before it builds.
Do I need an engineer for my wall?
Taller walls, and walls holding up a structure or a road, can need an engineered design. Ben will tell you at the estimate if yours looks like one of them.
