Retaining walls in Leicester, NC

Retaining walls around Leicester

Around Leicester, a lot of homes sit at the foot of a bank, beside a drive that was cut into the hill, or on a pad that was benched out of a slope. Over the years those cut faces wash, slump and creep toward the house or the gravel. A block retaining wall holds them back and gives you flat, usable ground again.

Hazy River Earthworks is based in Leicester, so a wall here is close to home. Ben can stop by to look at the bank without making a day of it. Once the wall is up, he is near enough to check how it handles the first big rain.

This page is about walls in Leicester. For the service across the region see retaining walls, and for everything else we do close to home see the Leicester service area page.

Local know-how

Retaining walls in Leicester: what to know

Retaining walls on Leicester ground

Leicester is an unincorporated community in Buncombe County, about 10 miles northwest of Asheville. The area was called Turkey Creek before it took the Leicester name. NC 63 runs through it on the way into Asheville, and Newfound Creek runs through the area. Above the creek bottoms, the ground turns steep and wooded quickly.

That shape drives most wall work here. Older homes sit low, near the road or a creek, with a bank right behind them. Newer homes sit higher, on pads cut into the hill, with long drives below. Each one leaves a slope that needs holding.

Walls that go with the drive and the pad

Many Leicester walls start as part of another job. A drive is widened and the cut bank needs a wall. A pad is cut for a garage and the high side needs holding. Because we also do the grading and site prep, the wall is set to the finished grade instead of a guess.

If the drive itself is the problem, see gravel driveways in Leicester. A rebuilt drive and a wall along its cut are often priced together.

What drives the price of a wall

There is no single price per foot that fits every Leicester wall. Height matters most, since taller walls need bigger block, deeper bases and sometimes an engineer. Length, access for the machine, how much digging the base needs and whether rock turns up all move the number too. So does how far the stone and block have to travel up your drive.

The retaining wall cost guide walks through each of those. Then call for a free estimate on your own bank.

Permits in an unincorporated community

Leicester has no town hall of its own, since incorporation was proposed but never adopted. Buncombe County is the office to call about a wall. Whether you need a permit depends on height, location and what the wall supports, so check with the county before work starts.

Do you build retaining walls in Leicester, NC?

Yes. Our yard is in Leicester, so walls here are close to home. The estimate is free.

How much should I expect to pay for a retaining wall?

It depends on height, length, access, how much digging the base needs and whether rock is in the way. We do not quote a price per foot over the phone. Ben measures the bank and gives you a price before work starts.

My bank keeps sliding onto the drive. Is a wall the only fix?

Not always. Sometimes regrading the slope and covering it is enough. If there is no room to lay the bank back, a wall is usually the answer. Ben will tell you which fits your ground.

Do I need a permit for a wall in Leicester?

Leicester is unincorporated, so Buncombe County is the office to ask. It depends on the wall, so call the county before work starts.
