Land clearing in Marion, NC
Land clearing around Marion
Marion is the county seat of McDowell County, where the Blue Ridge drops toward the Piedmont. The city sits lower than Asheville, at roughly 1,300 to 1,400 feet. To the west and north the county climbs hard toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. Almost half of McDowell County lies inside Pisgah National Forest.
That mix shapes the land people call us about. Some of it is open, gentler ground near town and along the Catawba River valley. Some is steep, wooded tract land up toward the mountains, where a homesite has to be cut out of the trees. Both kinds grow back fast when nobody keeps them open.
Marion is about 45 miles from our yard, at the east edge of the area we cover. At that distance we plan the work carefully. Ben walks the land first, then the clearing, stump pulling and hauling are lined up so the crew can finish in one trip. See the main land clearing page for the service in general, or the Marion service page for other work.

Local know-how
Land clearing in Marion: what to know
Land clearing in Marion for bigger jobs
Clearing in Marion tends to be the bigger end of the work. A few acres of woods ahead of a house. A tract that needs a road and a building site opened. A family place where the fields have turned to scrub. Those jobs suit the trip, and they suit our setup, because the same crew can keep going into grading once the trees are out.
Thick brush and saplings are usually ground in place with forestry mulching, which leaves a mulch layer on the soil and no burn pile. Mature timber and stumps need pulling. Most tracts end up a mix of both, and how much of each is agreed at the estimate.
City of Marion or McDowell County permits
Which office you call depends on the line. Inside the city limits, the City of Marion runs its own building inspections and plan review. Outside the city, McDowell County Building Inspections handles permits. The county lists all land-disturbing activity in the flood zone as needing a floodplain permit, so low ground near the Catawba or a creek deserves a call first.
McDowell County does not appear on the state's list of local erosion control programs. That means erosion permits for larger clearing usually go through NC DEQ's Asheville Regional Office. Check with them on a big site before work starts. Ben will raise it at the estimate if your acreage looks like it needs one.
What a cleared Marion tract is ready for
Clearing is only worth it if the ground is usable afterward. When we leave, the stumps are out where the house and drive go, the brush is gone or mulched down, and the surveyor can walk the lines. If you want, the crew stays on for grading and site prep so the pad and drive are cut while the machines are already there.
Sloped ground should not sit bare through a wet spell. We can shape it, add silt fence and get cover on it so the first storm does not carry it off. For the factors that set the price, read the land clearing cost guide for Western NC.

Do you take land clearing jobs in Marion, NC?
Yes. Marion is about 45 miles from our Leicester yard. We schedule Marion and McDowell County jobs ahead and plan them so the clearing gets done in one visit.
Who issues permits for clearing land in McDowell County?
Inside Marion's city limits, the City of Marion handles building inspections. Outside them, McDowell County Building Inspections does, and it requires a floodplain permit for land disturbance in the flood zone. For erosion control on a larger site, check with NC DEQ's Asheville Regional Office.
Is a small clearing job in Marion worth the trip?
Call and describe it. Larger jobs make the most sense at this distance, but if a small one can be paired with grading or a drive on the same property, it often works out.
Can you clear a wooded Marion tract without burning the brush?
Yes. Forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees where they stand and leaves the mulch on the ground. Larger wood and stumps can be hauled off.
