Land clearing in Marshall, NC

Land clearing around Marshall

Marshall is the county seat of Madison County. The town sits on the French Broad River, which runs west along its south side. On every other side the ground rises into steep mountain terrain. Much of Madison County is like that: rugged, heavily wooded and thinly settled.

Hurricane Helene hit Marshall hard in 2024. Flooding damaged the town hall and destroyed several buildings, and mud filled the low ground. Up the hollows, wind and rain dropped trees across drives, yards and private roads. A lot of the clearing we hear about in Madison County still starts with that storm.

Our yard in Leicester is about 16 miles away, just across the county line. Ben comes up, walks the ground with you and prices the job before anything starts. For the service in general, see the main land clearing page. For other work around town, see the Marshall service page.

Local know-how

Land clearing in Marshall: what to know

Land clearing in Marshall on steep ground

Very little of the land around Marshall is flat. Homesites sit on benches cut into a slope or up a cove, at the end of a long climb. Clearing on ground like that is slower and needs more planning than clearing a field. The machine has to work from a safe footing, and the cut trees have to come down without rolling into the road or the creek below.

We clear in the order the site needs: the drive corridor first so equipment can get in, then the building area, then whatever else is in the plan. Brush and small trees on steep sides are often ground by forestry mulching. That mulch stays on the slope and helps hold the soil.

Helene timber and downed trees

Storm timber is its own kind of work. Trees that came down in Helene are often hung up on each other, root balls are pulled half out of the bank, and the ground under them is soft. We cut it apart from the machine, pull the root balls, and either mulch the debris or load it out. The damaged ground can then be graded and stabilised.

Where the storm damage reaches a creek or the river bank, clearing is only part of it. Our creek and river bank repair page covers rebuilding a bank once the debris is out.

Madison County offices to check with

Building permits and inspections in Madison County go through the county's Development Services and Inspections office. Madison County is not on the state's list of local erosion control programs. So erosion permits for a larger clearing job generally go through NC DEQ's Asheville Regional Office. Work in or beside a stream can need its own approval.

Ben will tell you at the estimate if your job looks like it needs a permit, and who gets it is agreed before work starts.
