Gravel driveways in Marshall, NC
Gravel driveways around Marshall
Marshall is the county seat of Madison County, and the town itself is squeezed between the French Broad River and steep mountainsides. Locals describe it as a block wide and a mile long. Homes outside the town limits sit up the slopes and hollows, reached by drives that climb hard from the river and the valley roads.
Hurricane Helene hit Marshall hard in 2024, destroying several buildings in town and damaging the town hall. A storm like that strips gravel off hillside drives, plugs pipes and cuts gullies where a ditch used to carry the water. A drive patched in a hurry just to get a car out tends to come apart again a season or two later.
We are about 16 miles away in Leicester, just south of the county line. Ben comes out, walks the drive with you and tells you what it needs and what it will cost before any work starts.

Gravel driveways in Marshall: what to know
Gravel driveway repair in Marshall after the storm
A washed drive needs more than stone dumped in the hole. We cut out the soft and washed sections, rebuild the base, compact it and reshape the surface so it sheds water to the side. The ditch gets cleaned or recut, and where water has to cross, a pipe goes in. See culvert and driveway pipe for that piece.
If the storm also took part of a creek bank along the drive, that is a separate repair. Our creek and river bank repair work is common in Madison County.
Steep pitches and switchbacks
Many Marshall drives gain a lot of height in a short run. On a grade like that, water picks up speed and takes the fine stone with it. The fix is to break the water up: a crown, water bars or turnouts that kick it off the drive, and a ditch on the uphill side that can carry it.
Where a drive is simply too steep, moving part of the route across the slope can make it workable. The steep gravel driveway guide goes deeper on that.
Roads, entrances and permits
US 25 and 70 bypass Marshall to the northeast, and US 70 Business runs through town as Main Street. Many other roads out to homesites are state roads too. NCDOT requires a driveway permit to create or change access to the state system, so a new or moved entrance starts with a call to the local District Engineer's office.
Regrading and restoning an existing drive that keeps the same entrance is different from cutting a new one. If you are unsure which yours is, ask at the estimate.
What a rebuilt drive gives you
A drive you can get up in a wet spell, that does not need stone every spring and that will not wash the next time a storm stalls over the county. Length, slope, how much is washed and how much stone it takes decide the price. Call (828) 900-1749 or send the form.

Can you fix a Marshall driveway that washed out in Helene?
Yes. Storm washed drives and private roads are some of the most common work around Madison County. We rebuild the base, reshape the drive and fix the drainage that let it wash.
What are the downsides of a gravel driveway?
Gravel can rut, wash and throw stone if it was built thin or has no drainage. On a well built drive with a good base, a crown and ditches, upkeep drops to a light regrade and some fresh stone now and then.
Do I need a permit to put gravel on my driveway?
Adding stone to an existing drive with the same entrance usually is not a new access. A new or moved entrance onto a state road needs an NCDOT driveway permit. Check with the District Engineer's office if you are unsure.
