Land clearing in Alexander, NC

Land clearing around Alexander

Alexander is an unincorporated community in northern Buncombe County, on the French Broad River and NC 251. It sits about three miles west of Weaverville, at roughly 1,900 feet. Leicester, where we keep our equipment, is right next door to the southwest.

The land here comes in two kinds. Along the river there is low, flatter bottom land. Back from the river it climbs into steep wooded slopes, with houses up long gravel drives. Both grow over quickly. River ground fills with brush and young trees, and hillside lots bought for a house usually start as solid woods.

Because we are so close, Ben can come out on short notice to look at your land. Small jobs make sense here, not just big ones. The main land clearing page covers the service, and the Alexander service page lists everything else we do nearby.

Local know-how

Land clearing in Alexander: what to know

Land clearing in Alexander near the French Broad

Clearing near the river takes a lighter touch. Low ground can stay soft after rain, so we pick the time and the machine to suit it. Brush and saplings are usually ground in place with forestry mulching, which leaves the soil covered instead of bare. Trees right at the bank are often worth leaving, since their roots help hold it.

If clearing would mean working in the river or a creek, or on the bank itself, that can need a permit and is talked through before any work. Bank damage is a separate job, covered on our creek and river bank repair page.

Homesites on the slopes above the river

Up the hill, clearing is about getting a house site and a drive out of the woods. The drive corridor opens first, often climbing from NC 251 or a side road. Then the house site and septic area are cleared and the stumps pulled. The rest of the trees stay, and the ones you want saved get marked during the walk-through.

Once the lot is open, the slope needs protecting before rain finds it. The same crew can grade the pad, rough in the drive and put silt fence where the ground drops toward a ditch.

Buncombe County is the permit office

Alexander has no town government, so permits go through Buncombe County. The county's erosion control division requires a permit once land disturbance reaches one acre. In a hillside subdivision the line is a quarter acre. Smaller jobs still have to keep sediment on the property.

Ben will tell you at the estimate if your clearing is near either line. For what drives the price, read land clearing cost in Western NC before you call.

Do you clear land in Alexander, NC?

Yes. Our yard is in Leicester, the next community over, so Alexander is about as close to home as work gets for us. Small jobs and large ones both make sense here.

Can you clear brush on river bottom land without tearing up the ground?

Usually. Brush and small trees are ground in place, which leaves a mulch cover on the soil. The timing is picked so the machine is not working soft, wet ground.

What permit do I need to clear land in Alexander?

Alexander is unincorporated, so the county is who to ask. Buncombe County wants an erosion control permit once you disturb an acre, or a quarter acre inside a hillside subdivision. Work in a stream can need its own approval.

Can you clear a drive corridor up to a hillside homesite off NC 251?

Yes. The corridor is usually the first thing cleared, so equipment can reach the house site. The drive can then be graded and stoned by the same crew.
