Land clearing in Hendersonville, NC

Land clearing around Hendersonville

Hendersonville is the county seat of Henderson County, about 22 miles south of Asheville at roughly 2,100 feet. Mud Creek runs north through the city, east of downtown, on its way to the French Broad River. I-26 runs along the east side of town. Around it the county mixes mountain slopes, valleys and farm country.

Apples have been the county's most important crop since the Second World War. So a fair share of rural land here is orchard ground or old farmland. When an orchard is pulled out or a field is left alone, it fills with scrub and saplings within a few seasons. Wooded lots on the hills around town are the other common job.

Hendersonville is about 35 miles from our yard in Leicester, so we book work here ahead of time. Ben still walks every property before he prices it. The main land clearing page explains the service. The Hendersonville service page covers the rest of our work in the area.

Local know-how

Land clearing in Hendersonville: what to know

Land clearing in Hendersonville on old farm and orchard ground

Clearing farm ground is a different job from clearing a wooded hillside. Old fruit trees leave a grid of stumps and roots behind. Fence rows grow into thick lines of brush. A field left for a few years fills with briars and young trees. We pull what has to come out, grind what can be ground, and leave ground you can mow, plant or build on.

Where the land is heading for a house, the clearing follows the plan for the house, the drive and the septic area. Where it is going back to pasture or garden, forestry mulching is often enough. The mulch stays on the soil and nothing is burned.

Henderson County erosion rules and the city

Henderson County runs its own erosion control program. It covers the unincorporated county and the City of Hendersonville, along with Laurel Park, Fletcher and Flat Rock. So for land disturbance in or around Hendersonville, the county erosion control office is the place to ask. Projects in the Town of Mills River go to the state's Asheville Regional Office instead.

If the land is inside the city limits, check the city's own zoning rules as well. Work near Mud Creek or any of its branches calls for extra care and a check on permits before anything is cut. Ben will flag it at the estimate if your clearing looks big enough to need a plan.

After the trees come out

A cleared lot is the start of the job, not the end of it. The same crew can move straight into grading and site prep, cutting the pad, roughing in the drive and shaping the ground so the water leaves the site. That saves you from waiting weeks for a second outfit while the bare dirt washes.
