Land clearing in Waynesville, NC

Land clearing around Waynesville

Waynesville is the county seat of Haywood County. It sits in the valley of Richland Creek, a branch of the Pigeon River, between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge. At close to 2,700 feet it is higher than Asheville, and the Pisgah National Forest starts just outside town.

The town takes in Hazelwood, which merged with Waynesville in 1995. Frog Level, near the creek, is named for how often Richland Creek used to flood it. Above the valley floor, the land climbs steeply into wooded slopes. That is where most homes outside the center sit, and where most of our Waynesville clearing is.

Waynesville is about 30 miles west of our yard in Leicester. We plan the trip so the clearing, stump work and hauling get done together. The main land clearing page describes the service. The Waynesville service page covers our other work in Haywood County.

Land clearing in Waynesville: what to know

Land clearing in Waynesville on high, steep ground

Clearing a mountain lot near Waynesville is mostly about order and footing. The drive corridor opens first, so the machine has a way in and a way out. Then the building site, then the septic area, then any view work. Each step is planned so the cut trees and the loose soil stay on your land and off the road below.

Brush on a steep side can be ground in place with forestry mulching, which leaves a mat on the slope. Trees on the house site come out with their stumps, so the ground under the pad is solid. Anything that cannot stay is loaded and hauled.

Opening a view without stripping the hill

A lot of Waynesville land is bought for the view, and the view is usually behind trees. Clearing for it is selective. We take out the trees blocking the line you want, plus the undergrowth, and leave the ones that frame it and hold the slope. Ben will walk the line with you and mark it before anything is cut.

Taking every tree off a steep hillside is rarely a good idea. Roots hold soil. A slope cleared too hard can start to move in a wet season, so we leave cover where it matters and plan erosion control for the ground that is opened.

Town of Waynesville or Haywood County

The office depends on where the land is. Inside the town limits, Waynesville's Development Services handles zoning, building inspections, floodplain rules and erosion control. Outside town, Haywood County runs its own erosion control program for the unincorporated county, Clyde and Maggie Valley. Both expect sediment to stay on the site, so call before a large clearing job starts.

Low ground near Richland Creek can fall under floodplain rules. Ben will raise that at the estimate if your property looks like it is in it.
