Land clearing in Woodfin, NC
Land clearing around Woodfin
A Woodfin lot rarely grows back on flat ground. Much of the town climbs away from the French Broad River and Beaverdam Creek. So the brush you want gone usually sits on a slope above a house, a street or a creek. Cutting it down is the easy part. Clearing it without sending the soil downhill is the real job.
Hazy River Earthworks is based in Leicester, about 10 miles from Woodfin. Ben walks the lot with you before any price is given. Trees you want to keep get marked first. Then the trees, brush, briars, stumps and root balls that are in the way come out, and you are left with ground you can build on, drive on or simply use again.
This page is about clearing inside Woodfin. The main land clearing page covers the service across the region, and the Woodfin service area page lists the other work the crew does in town.

Local know-how
Land clearing in Woodfin: what to know
Land clearing in Woodfin on steep ground
Woodfin is its own town, incorporated in 1971, and it borders the north side of Asheville. It is not a flat river town. A lot of it is wooded hillside, and the town has its own steep slope ordinance. The Town of Woodfin planning and zoning page says it applies to land at or above 2,200 feet with an average natural slope of 20 percent or more. It also covers any land at or above 3,000 feet, whatever the slope.
If your lot is high and steep, ask the town about that ordinance before clearing starts. Ben will raise it at the estimate if your ground looks like it could fall under it. On a lot like that, the plan is to open only what the house, the drive and the septic area need, and to leave the rest of the cover alone.
Clearing near the French Broad and Beaverdam Creek
Lower Woodfin follows Riverside Drive and the river. Beaverdam Creek comes down past Elk Mountain Road and meets the French Broad there. Helene hit this corridor hard. Buncombe County's greenway project page reports significant streambank erosion and slope instability on the northern end of the Riverside Drive segment after the storm.
Clearing close to water calls for a lighter hand. Roots are what hold a bank together, so we keep a strip of growth along a creek unless there is a good reason to take it. Woodfin's flood damage prevention ordinance is run by Buncombe County Planning and Development, so flood zone questions go to the county. If a bank on your land has already let go, see creek and river bank repair.
Mulch it in place or pull it out
Plenty of Woodfin jobs never need a stump pulled. A back slope gone wild, a view that has closed in or a property line lost in briars is often work for forestry mulching. The machine grinds brush and small trees where they stand. The mulch stays on the soil, and on a hillside that layer is worth keeping.
A building site is different. Stumps and root balls under a house pad or a drive have to come out, and the holes get filled and compacted so nothing sinks later. Most jobs are a mix of the two. The split is agreed on the ground, with you, before the machines unload.
Permits, and what happens after the clearing
Buncombe County's erosion control office covers the whole county except the City of Asheville. Its page says a permit is needed for one acre or more of land disturbance. In a Hillside Subdivision, as the county ordinance defines it, the trigger drops to a quarter acre. Protective measures such as silt fence are expected on any disturbed ground, permit or not.
Bare clay on a Woodfin slope will start to wash in the first hard rain. The same crew does the grading and the erosion control, so cleared ground is shaped and covered straight away instead of sitting open for weeks.

Do you clear land in Woodfin, NC?
Yes. Woodfin is about 10 miles from the yard in Leicester. Hillside lots, overgrown yards and homesites are the usual clearing jobs in town.
Does Woodfin's steep slope ordinance affect clearing my lot?
It can if your land is high and steep. The town's page ties it to elevation and average slope. Check with Woodfin planning and zoning before a big job, and Ben will flag it at the estimate if your lot looks close.
Can you clear brush along Beaverdam Creek or the river?
Yes, with care. We usually leave a strip of growth on the bank because the roots hold it. Work in or right beside a stream can need a permit, and that is raised before anything starts.
How much does land clearing cost in Woodfin?
It depends on how thick the growth is, the size of the trees, the slope, access for the machine and whether material is mulched or hauled. The land clearing cost guide explains each one. Your estimate is free and done on site.
What should I send to get a Woodfin estimate?
Call (828) 900-1749 or send the form with your street, what needs clearing and a few photos if you have them. Ben will set a time to walk the lot with you.
