Land clearing in Mars Hill, NC
Land clearing around Mars Hill
Mars Hill is a small town in eastern Madison County, about 17 miles north of Asheville. At around 2,330 feet it runs cooler than Asheville. Mars Hill University, the oldest college in Western North Carolina, sits in the middle of town. I-26 passes just to the east at Exit 11, and NC 213 runs through town and on to Marshall.
Gabriel Creek drains the west side of town, and branches of Big Branch drain part of the east side. Both run south to Ivy Creek and on to the French Broad. Away from town the land is a patchwork of fields, wooded ridges and coves, with homes set back on long drives.
Our Leicester yard is one county south. Mars Hill is a short run up I-26 for the crew. The main land clearing page explains how the work is done, and the Mars Hill service page lists the rest of what we do in town.

Local know-how
Land clearing in Mars Hill: what to know
Land clearing in Mars Hill fields and ridge lots
Rural land around Mars Hill tends to be one of two things. Open ground that was farmed and has since filled in. Or wooded ridge and cove land being opened for a house. The first is mostly brush and young trees, which forestry mulching grinds down in place. The second needs trees felled, stumps pulled and the debris dealt with.
On a ridge lot, clearing often doubles as opening a view. Tell Ben which way you want to look, and which trees frame it. Those stay. The rest of the clearing is planned around them so the slope below the house keeps enough cover to hold.
Inside or outside the Mars Hill town limits
Permits depend on where the property sits. Inside the town limits, the Town of Mars Hill has its own planning and zoning. Outside them, Madison County's Development Services and Inspections office handles building permits. For a large clearing job, erosion control generally goes through the NC DEQ Asheville Regional Office, since Madison County is not on the state's list of local programs.
Clearing near Gabriel Creek, Big Branch or another stream needs more care at the bank. Ben will point out anything that looks like it needs a permit when he walks the land.
Ground that is ready for the next step
When the clearing is done you should be able to see the land, walk it and plan on it. If a house is coming, we can move straight into grading and site prep while the machines are on site. If the field is going back to hay or pasture, it is left ready to mow or seed.
Cleared slopes get covered or seeded before they sit through a rain. That keeps the topsoil on your land and out of the creek. Call (828) 900-1749 to set up a walk-through.

Do you clear land around Mars Hill, NC?
Yes. Mars Hill is one county north of our yard in Leicester and part of our regular area. We clear overgrown fields, ridge lots, homesites and drive corridors in and around town.
Can you clear a view on a Mars Hill ridge lot?
Yes. Show Ben the view you want and the trees that should frame it. The clearing is planned around those, and enough cover is left on the slope to hold it.
Does the Town of Mars Hill or Madison County handle my permit?
Inside the town limits, the Town of Mars Hill handles planning and zoning. Outside them, Madison County Development Services and Inspections handles building permits.
Can an overgrown field be cleared without hauling everything away?
Usually. Brush, briars and small trees are ground in place and the mulch stays on the soil. Only larger trees and stumps need pulling or hauling.
