Gravel driveways in Candler, NC
Gravel driveways around Candler
Candler is an unincorporated community in Buncombe County, sitting in the Hominy Valley about halfway between downtown Asheville and Canton. Mount Pisgah rises to the south. Homes here are on rural lots, small acreage and hillsides, and nearly every one has a gravel drive.
Most of the drives we see in Candler were built as cheaply as possible and topped up ever since. Stone was spread straight on red clay, with no base and no crown. The result is potholes that come back, mud in the tire tracks and a soft spot that grows every winter.
We build drives the other way round, base first. Ben walks the drive with you, explains what is under the stone and what it needs, and gives a price before work starts.

Gravel driveways in Candler: what to know
Gravel driveway installation in Candler, step by step
First the route is cleared and the topsoil comes off. Topsoil is soft and holds water, so it has no place under a drive. The subgrade is cut to shape and packed down. Then the base stone goes in, is spread and compacted, and the top stone goes over it and is rolled.
The finished drive is crowned, higher in the middle than at the edges, so rain runs to the sides. A ditch or swale along the uphill side catches the water from above. The ABC stone and crusher run guide explains the stone choices.
What goes down before the gravel
This is the question that decides whether a drive lasts. The answer is a firm, compacted subgrade with the topsoil removed, then a layer of base stone that locks together when it is rolled. Fines in the base fill the gaps and help it set up hard.
Spreading clean stone on bare clay skips all of that. The stone sinks into the clay when it is wet, the clay pumps up through it, and the surface turns to mud. On a soft spot we dig out the bad material before the base goes in.
Hillside drives off NC 151 and the main roads
Candler lies along NC 151 and US 19, 23 and 74 Business, and many homes sit up the slopes on either side. Drives that leave those roads often climb right away, and that first pitch is where most washouts start. We give it a crown, a ditch and turnouts so the water leaves early.
A new or moved entrance onto a state road needs an NCDOT driveway permit from the local District Engineer's office. A pipe under the entrance carries the roadside ditch. See culvert installation.
Permits for building in Candler
Because Candler is not a town, there is no town hall. Building permits come from Buncombe County Permits and Inspections, which serves the unincorporated county, and land disturbing falls under Buncombe County Erosion Control. Call (828) 900-1749 or send the form for your free estimate.

What should go down before gravel on a new driveway?
Strip the topsoil, cut and compact the subgrade, then lay and compact a base stone layer. The top stone goes over that. Gravel on bare clay sinks and turns to mud.
Can you rebuild my old Candler driveway instead of adding more stone?
Yes. We grade out the ruts, fix soft spots, rebuild the base where it is gone, crown the drive and add drainage, then put fresh stone down.
Who issues building permits in Candler?
Candler is unincorporated, so Buncombe County Permits and Inspections handles it. Land disturbing work falls under Buncombe County Erosion Control.
How long does a driveway rebuild take in Candler?
Most residential drives take days rather than weeks, depending on length, slope and weather. We are about 12 miles away in Leicester, so scheduling is simple.
