Mountain ground
WNC ground has rock close to the surface, clay that holds water, and slopes that move if they are cut carelessly. Excavation here means planning where the spoil goes, where the water goes, and how the cut will be held once it is open.
Backfill that holds
A trench or foundation that is backfilled in one go settles for years. Backfill goes in in lifts and is compacted, so what goes back in the ground stays level.

Do you dig foundations and basements?
Yes. Foundation and basement excavation, including cutting into slopes, is core work.
Do you call 811 before digging?
Public utilities are located through NC 811 before digging, as the law requires. Private lines — septic, irrigation, power to outbuildings — are the owner's to point out.
What if you hit rock?
It happens in the mountains. If rock or anything unexpected turns up, you are told before the work or price changes.
