Retaining walls in Candler, NC

Retaining walls around Candler

Candler is a mix of valley floor and steep side ground. A home on the flat often has a hill climbing right behind it. A home up the hollow often has a drive cut into the bank. In both cases there is a face of red clay that wants to come down, and a retaining wall is how you stop it.

We build block walls that start below ground. The base is dug, compacted and levelled first. Drain pipe and clean stone go behind the block, with fabric to keep the soil out. The result is a wall that stays straight, a yard or drive you can use and a bank that is no longer washing into the house or the ditch.

Candler is about 12 miles from the yard in Leicester, a short run for the crew. The main retaining walls page covers the service across Western NC, and the Candler service area page lists the other work we do there.

Local know-how

Retaining walls in Candler: what to know

Retaining walls for Hominy Valley lots

Candler is an unincorporated community in Buncombe County, in the Hominy Valley west of Asheville. Hominy Creek runs from the Haywood County line and winds through the valley to the French Broad River. Smoky Park Highway, US 19/23, is the main road through it. The valley itself has rolling hills, but the ground climbs fast off it, and Mount Pisgah stands to the south.

So walls here tend to fall into two groups. On the valley floor, a wall usually holds the bank behind a house or squares off a yard near the creek, and drainage is the main concern. Higher up, off roads like NC 151 that climb toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, the wall is more often about height, holding a cut for a drive or a house pad on steep ground.

Taller slopes: tier it or engineer it

One tall wall is not always the right answer. On a high bank, two shorter walls with a level bench between them can be easier to drain and easier to plant. Sometimes a single taller wall is the only way to get the flat ground you need, and then the question is whether it needs an engineered design.

Walls holding up a house, a road or a heavy load behind them often do. Ben will tell you at the estimate if your Candler wall looks like one of those, so it is planned properly from the start.

Permits and the county

Because Candler is not an incorporated town, the office to ask about permits is Buncombe County. Requirements for a wall depend on its height, what it supports and where it sits on the lot. Read retaining wall permits in Buncombe County, then check with the county for your address before work begins.

If the job also opens up a good piece of ground, the county's erosion control rules may apply too. Ben raises that at the estimate so it does not surprise you.

Do you build retaining walls in Candler, NC?

Yes. Candler is about 12 miles from our yard in Leicester. Walls for hillside homes, yards and drives are regular work there.

What is the 1/3 rule for retaining walls?

It is a rule of thumb, and people use it for different things, most often how deep to bury the first course or how wide the base should be. Treat it as a rough guide only. The block maker's install specs and any engineer's design set the real numbers for your wall.

Should I build one tall wall or two shorter ones?

It depends on the slope and the space. Two tiers with a level bench between them can drain better and look softer. Ben will lay out both options at the estimate if the slope allows it.

Who handles permits for a wall in Candler?

Candler is unincorporated, so ask Buncombe County. What applies depends on the wall's height, what it holds up and where it sits.

Can you grade the yard while you build the wall?

Yes. We do the grading too, so the ground above and below the wall is shaped in the same job and the water runs where it should.
